Just the eBike Basics

It's easy to get overwhelmed with electric bike jargon, so we're going to keep this simple. Read on for just the essentials on motors, batteries, range and class ratings.

Motors

Motors are what make it feel like you're riding with a tailwind at all times. They can vary slightly in power (watts) and efficiency, but the biggest difference is location. Mid-drive units are located in the center of where you pedal for stable and smooth power delivery. Hub-drive units are located in the rear wheel and are generally lighter and more affordable that mid-drive systems. Both are excellent options, so ride them both and see which system better fits your riding style and budget.

Batteries

Batteries are the fuel for your eBike fun. Some batteries are removable for transport or off bike charging, while others remain in the bicycle frame. They also vary in size (watt-hour)  which directly impacts how fast and far you can ride. The greater the watt-hour rating, the more power the battery can store. Don't mix up motor watts and battery watt-hour, these are two separate things. If you are curious about how far you can ride, visit the Bosch eBike Range Calculator here.

Classes

There is a lot on eBike info, but we aren't saying you need to go back to school. Just like other motor vehicles, electric bikes are broken into classes. Class 1 eBikes require the rider to pedal and provide assistance up to 20 mph. Class 2 eBikes also assist up to 20 mph, but they have ability to do so without having to pedal. Just hit the throttle and go! Finally, class 3 eBikes are the hot rods. Like class 1 eBikes, class 3 eBikes require the rider to pedal for assistance, but they keep going up to 28 mph.
